Mayor says Portuguese community “is not structured” in France

Paris City Councilman Hermano Sanches Ruivo said that the image of Portugal in France is a country of trust and, in recent years, has been fighting the stereotypes of the Portuguese community, but it needs to organize itself.

“The image [de Portugal] it wasn’t that bad, it was more about fighting stereotypes. But it didn’t go as far as it could have gone because the Portuguese community is not structured. And other communities gain much more visibility than we do, “said Hermano Sanches Ruivo, councilor in the Paris Chamber with the portfolio of Europe, in an interview with the Lusa agency.

The mayor considered that Portugal is seen “as a country of trust” and that the fact that more and more French people visit and know the country, places it “on another level” of interest and knowledge on the part of the Gauls.

Despite the disadvantages of the lack of organization of the Portuguese community in France, Sanches Ruivo reported that during the covid-19 pandemic, solidarity and mobilization have been working.

“The solidarity aspect worked and the crisis had a positive impact on the mobilization of the community”, assured the Portuguese.

At the head of the Activa association, which brings together the French and Portuguese cities that maintain cooperation ties, the mayor wants to organize on the 23rd and 24th of November, during the hall that brings together all the elected representatives of France in Paris, the first meeting of sprouted cities between the two countries.

“There are several cities in France that are looking for a Portuguese city to cooperate. Like Reims, Arras, Blois or Colmar,” said Sanches Ruivo, stressing that there are currently 237 partnerships in force between Portuguese and French cities.

Another important moment for these cities will happen with the cross-season between France and Portugal, which was postponed to the beginning of 2022 and which, according to Hermano Sanches Ruivo, should extend beyond the capitals.

“We are at the beginning of something and, first, we need to clean up the twins that are inactive, but if we have the Cross Season projection, it makes some municipalities in France do things like regular Portuguese weeks in those cities”, he concluded.

Hermano Sanches Ruivo, who was born in 1966, in Alcains, Castelo Branco district, is a socialist and started in July last year the second term in the left-wing executive led by Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris.
