The Latvian Ministry of Economy has been instructed to develop proposals for the safe operation of the beauty industry in a pandemic, the State Chancellery said.

Next week, the government plans to review the recommendations for the safe operation of the beauty industry prepared by the Interdepartmental Coordination Group and the Ministry of Economy. These recommendations will be prepared based on information provided by the Ministry of Health.

In mid-January, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins instructed the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with representatives of the beauty industry, to develop criteria for an epidemiologically safe work in the long term.

Beauty salons may resume work if the situation stabilizes markedly and the incidence of Covid-19 is less than 200 cases per 100,000 population. Currently, this figure is 569.1 cases, an increase of 2% over the last week.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health admits that there may be exceptions in the provision of certain services before the incidence rate drops to the desired level. These are hairdressing, manicure and pedicure, but only for hygienic purposes.

Cancellation of the ban is possible only if a number of conditions are met. For example, may only be allowed to operate those salons that have notified the Health Inspectorate of their activities. In addition, information materials should be placed in the salon, 25 sq. m of space per visitor, and only one master and one client can be in one room.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health points out that, with the available resources, it is impossible to ensure sufficiently effective control over compliance with the requirements in the field of beauty, therefore, it calls on the Ministry of Economy, in cooperation with representatives of this industry, to develop additional mechanisms for effective self-control and control.
