Mathematician Kollár: Tighter lockdown works, less strict no – Home – News

January 14, 2021

The tighter the lockdown works, the less strict it doesn’t. The mathematician Richard Kollár pointed this out on the social network. According to him, it can be seen from other countries that if the anti-pandemic measures are soon relaxed, ie before we fall low enough for other instruments to work, it will go up again and it will be difficult to stop again.

“Usually the peak comes about ten days after the introduction of adequately strict measures. It’s the same with us, which is great. Thanks to the inactivity of the authorities, we are significantly behind our neighbors – Austria, Poland or Hungary – but we are not the last, “said the mathematician.

It considers it necessary to make intensive use of available effective tools, such as frequent testing where necessary, tracing and active focal search, to know where to test intensively. “We need to keep the current measures for a few more weeks. In the largest outbreaks, whether they are districts, municipalities, cities, city districts, settlements or hostels, prisons, plants, it is necessary to test very intensively, elsewhere to strengthen the capacity and availability of mobile collection points (MOM), “said Kollár. According to him, the positivity of antigen tests is the first indicator that shows the change much earlier than other indicators (with a sufficient level of testing), followed by the positivity of PCR tests and only with or after it comes the number of active cases or incidence.

He assumes that hospitals in Slovakia could be “more relieved” in about a week, ie about ten days earlier than we expected. As early as Thursday, however, they should see a slowdown in the situation. “This wave will last for a while, but we can already see its top,” said Kollár. According to him, the threats associated with New Year’s Eve celebrations have not yet materialized. However, as he noted, it is not yet possible to fully confirm it, we have to wait another week to fully confirm the trend. “It is possible and probable that people took the epidemiological situation seriously and listened extensively to the recommendations they received from the media. It’s great news because it says that we can still influence people’s behavior enough when the situation is bad, “the mathematician explained.

He reminded that if people do not persevere now, the opportunity to improve the pandemic situation in Slovakia will be missed so that the biggest threats are averted. If the most risky group can be vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, then according to Kollár, Slovakia will have the worst behind it, if the new mutations in the virus do not bring worse destruction.
