Master Package – Mercedes-Benz CLS 400 d 4Matic Test – Car Engine

For nearly two decades, we’ve come to know the brand’s four-door coupe as a sportier and more sophisticated-looking alternative to the E-Class, and the concept hasn’t changed much since then. Available from 2018, the current model, with the factory code C257, also retains the distinctive roof and window line of the first generation, which debuted in 2004, just as the long and flat hood has long been a hallmark of CLS. Although there has been no complaint about the design so far, the front was modified during last year’s update, and now the base model will also receive the nasal training previously privileged in the Avantgarde versions.

Compared to a length of nearly 5.0 meters, the interior is passive

But the bottom line is: the CLS is truly a car that can be admired in almost every detail! And when we take a seat behind the wheel, it will be immediately clear how high it represents. Although the touch-sensitive surfaces on the steering wheel have to be used for a while, be it the veining of the decorative inserts, the design of the speakers, the seats, or the closing of the doors, the driver has some positive effect from almost every direction. Just don’t be too tall! Due to the coupe’s bodywork, 180-centimeter passengers already have a narrow headroom at the rear, which, together with the small glass surfaces and chunky cardan tunnel, means that the CLS doesn’t feel particularly spacious compared to the 5.0-meter length. And sure, no matter how comfortable the front seats are, you have to jump deep, which isn’t necessarily lucky in everyday use.

One of the best diesel engines available today is the Mercedes 2.9-liter range

Although the CLS also offers four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, it is certain that the 400-d, 330-horsepower diesel will not be left out. On the one hand, with 700 Nm of torque (exactly as much as the first-generation CLS’s 5.5-liter V8 compressor knew), there’s no situation where it won’t have much power for a moment. On the other hand, with the exception of idling, the 2.9-liter block cannot be said to be diesel based on its sound. It sounds silky, deep in tone, has virtually no resonance – not even the most balanced four-cylinder can reach the six-row. While the 4Matic drive doesn’t have a problem with driving power on the road, it’s worth noting that despite the buffalo-powered engine, the CLS is not a sporty ride. Although it has the capabilities to do so, its steering and chassis also support comfortable driving, and the big Mercedes is undoubtedly a great partner for long journeys. There’s something soothing about the way the six-cylinder rests at 1,500 rpm at 130 km / h and there is almost no outside sound in the passenger compartment other than the noise of the tires. It is a pity that the price of 34.7 million thoroughly filters out the circle that can enjoy the services of this type.

The view to the rear is severely limited

I LIKED IT
• formaterv
• inner atmosphere
• comfortable seats
• motor character
I DID NOT LIKE
• high price
• rear headroom
• small tank

SUMMARY
Although the competition in the Audi A7 and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé is also strong, it is easy to get under the influence of the CLS due to its design and technical standards. On the altar of beauty, however, one has to sacrifice, not nearly as strong in terms of space and practicality as the E-Class.
