The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, previously known as 2019-nCoV, first appeared in Wuhan probably in mid-November 2019.
The first major outbreak of the coronavirus outbreak was a seafood market in Wuhan, which authorities closed on January 1 due to the spread of the disease.
In early January, Chinese authorities officially admitted that the disease in China is caused by a new virus from the coronavirus family – zoonotic viruses (other known viruses from this family include SARS and MERS).
There is a hypothesis that the virus spread from animals to humans by eating the flesh of wild animals: bats, snakes or pangolins.
The symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, are fever, cough, muscle pain, weakness. In over 80 percent the course of the disease is mild and flu-like. WHO estimates the mortality rate of the new coronavirus at around 3.4%. (in the case of flu – 0.1%).
The elderly or those suffering from chronic diseases are at increased risk due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, infection with the virus is usually very mild in children.
