Masking is still mandatory in Vienna

From Thursday, all over Austria, with the exception of grocery stores, there will be no obligation to wear a mask in commercial units. However, as both the Chancellor and the Minister of Health stressed that the provinces could make stricter provisions if the epidemiological situation so wished, the Mayor of Vienna took the opportunity, announcing that the current rules on mask wearing in the capital would not be relaxed.

This means that mask wear will continue to be mandatory in shops – and not just in grocery stores, but also in shoe and clothing stores, electronics and DIY stores. In addition, the mayor will extend the obligation to wear a mask to cultural and sports facilities if the event takes place indoors.

Ludwig justified the decision with the rapid spread of the delta variant. He stressed that by maintaining the existing epidemiological measures, he is acting to protect the population of the capital and, aware of his responsibilities, is trying to prevent further increases in epidemiological indicators and thus overcrowding of hospitals.

He added that both the existing free testing facility – in pharmacies and so-called test streets – and the expansion of the vaccination campaign through various vaccination campaigns will continue and will remain available to the capital’s residents.

In Austria, 5,098,929 people have so far received the first dose of the vaccine against SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus disease (Covid-19), and 4,085,306 received both. In the last 24 hours, 316 people have been newly diagnosed with the virus, and 654,314 positive cases have been registered since the outbreak began. The number of people cared for in the hospital is currently 124, and there are 39 people in need of intensive care. No one died of Covid-19 complications in the past day, leaving 10,729 deaths from the epidemic. The number of people who recovered from the disease was 639,831.
