Martorell joins World Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Day

Today, May 12, is World Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Day. The objectives of the day, which also includes other Central Sensitization Syndromes, such as multiple chemical sensitivity, are to raise awareness of the existence of these diseases, to influence the need to investigate predisposing and triggering factors, and emphasize the importance of early detection.

at the request ofACAF – Catalan Association of Fibromyalgia and other Central Sensitization Syndromes Anoia Bridge has been lit up dark blue to remember this anniversary, which coincides with the date of birth of the nurse Florence Nightingale, who suffered from a similar illness.

Together with the Plataforma Familiars FM-SFC-SQMthe ACAF promotes the awareness and social awareness campaign #CatalunyadeBlauso that many places in the country are lit up in order to give visibility to the diseases and weave a great blue network of solidarity with the people affected.

Central Sensitization Syndromes are characterized by a hypersensitivity that causes an excessive response of the nervous system to some stimulus such as medications, stress, infections, chemicals or electromagnetic equipment. And this reaction remains over time even if the stimulus that caused it disappears.

Most of these syndromes have an unknown cause and share many symptoms, such as: fatigue that does not improve with rest and sleep that is not restorative, generalized pain without a specific ailment, recurrent infections, needing longer recovery time after of an effort or doing sport.

Also cognitive alterations (mental slowness, lack of concentration and memory), gastrointestinal disturbances (with no apparent cause that justifies them), hypersensitivity to various chemical substances and electromagnetic fields that causes an exaggerated response, and that remains over time despite the disappearance of the ‘stimulus that has generated it.

Neither Fibromyalgia nor Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has a specific cure. The treatment is multidisciplinary and focused on improving the health, autonomy and well-being of the people affected.
