Marcelo leaves an appeal for victims to report sexual abuse by the ‘Church’
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received, this Friday, the Independent Commission that investigates sexual abuse in the Church and left an appeal for victims to testify and use the right to report.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underlined the importance of the commission’s work. “By collecting anonymous testimonies and creating trust with those who testify, they then channel that information to the authorities”, stressed the President.
For the head of state, “it is shocking to have this type of crimes”, but he left the appeal for victims to denounce sexual abuse, defending that “the Portuguese must help in the search for justice”.
“It is necessary to take the investigation to the end, take as long as it takes, regardless of the number of cases that there are, and from there to draw the conclusions. I think that the Portuguese community and the various institutions, in the case also of the Catholic Church, should draw the conclusions from this procedure of the past”, he added.
