The announcement was made via site of the Presidency where it is mentioned that “the Assembly of the Republic confirmed on the 12th of May, by an absolute majority of the deputies in office, the new version of the diploma on medically assisted death”. Now “the President of the Republic has promulgated Decree n.º 43/XV, of the Assembly of the Republic, as required under article 136.º, n.º 2 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”.

This Tuesday Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had already advanced that he would promulgate the decree this Tuesday or Wednesday since he was “obliged”.

The President of the Republic also stated that he does not intend to express any further position on the decree since “the Constitution says that once vetoed and confirmed by Parliament, the President is forced, is obliged to promulgate, period, paragraph”.

The decree that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had vetoed on April 29 was again approved in Parliament on Friday with 129 votes in favor (deputies from PS, Iniciativa Liberal, Bloco de Esquerda, PAN and Livre) and 81 votes against (PSD, Enough and PCP).
