Marcelo confident in the package of measures to support families – Politics

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Friday “a good sign” that both the Government and the opposition are committed to a package of measures to support family income.

Speaking to journalists in São João da Pesqueira, during a visit to Vindouro, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that, in other countries, “governments come forward with proposals” and “oppositions, in many cases, are still studying proposals”.

“Here some advance, between this weekend and the beginning of next week. I think there is nothing like some competition to do well in the adoption of fundamental measures”, he stressed. According to the Head of State, the expectation for Monday’s extraordinary Council of Ministers is “very great”, because there is “an agreement in Portuguese politics about the need for measures”, between the Government and the opposition, “although each one presenting a different range of measures”.

On the one hand, on the part of the Government, there was “the convening of an extraordinary Council of Ministers for Monday, accelerating the taking of measures, even before dealing with other issues in the normal council on Thursday”, he said, adding know the measurements.

“On the other hand, the opposition, all of it, is also now moving forward with a package of emergency measures, which means that there is a space for agreement. Everyone admits that time cannot be wasted, facing the situation created by the pandemic and to follow the war and that is positive”, he considered.

In his view, “talking about measures for the emergency economic and financial situation is good, the Government wants to take them quickly and the opposition thinks they should also be taken quickly”.

The President of the Republic said that, “at this moment, the Portuguese have two concerns: one is health and the other is the economic and financial situation”.

With regard to health, he said it was positive that “a set of diplomas has been announced to regulate the statute of the National Health Service”, which should happen “probably next Thursday or the next week”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underlined that, at the same time, there is “very great attention on the part of the opposition regarding the expenditure of money foreseen in this year’s State Budget” in the area of health.

“I was thinking before the position of the minister (Marta Temido), it must continue and it must be affirmed both in terms of funds for health and in terms of organic health”, he stressed.

Asked about the measures that should be taken with regard to electricity and gas prices, the President of the Republic said that it is necessary to wait to see the path that the Government will follow: “whether it is the path of taxes or the path of other aids, if it’s a certain kind of financial support”.

“Let’s see if there is a coincidence of solutions or not. But one thing is the coincidence of diagnosis: it is necessary to act and act quickly”, he added.
