The British regulatory body announced that it had fined a group of drug manufacturers in the total amount of slightly more than 260 million pounds (360 million dollars) due to the high prices of hydrocortisone that they charged to the health system.
The regulator has fined Actavis UK, Auden McKenzie, Allergan Plc, Accord Healthcare, Intas Pharmaceuticals, Waymade Plc, Amdipharm, Advanz Pharma and some Cinvena companies.
The largest fine will be paid by the companies “Auden Mckenzie” and “Actavis UK”, in the amount of 221.1 million pounds.
The companies charged the state health system (NHS) “excessively high prices” for steroid hydrocortisone, which is used as a replacement therapy when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisone, the regulator explained on Thursday.
Companies also occasionally bought potential competitors, in order to prevent their entry into the health market. In addition, they raised drug prices as the sole suppliers and bribed remaining competing companies.
– It was a gross violation of the law, as well as charging excessive costs to the NHS. As a result, the funds for the treatment of patients were reduced – the executive director of the CMA, Andrea Kosceli, emphasized.
The mentioned companies were not available for comment on the statement of the executive director.
