Excess white metal wire baskets in the closet were lightly sanded and painted black with a small roller and glossy Miranol. Once the paint had dried, the baskets were lined with black garbage bags with a few holes cut in the bottoms to allow too much irrigation water to drain away.
Under each basket, frames were made of 50 x 50 mm timber according to the dimensions. With the help of a frame or two superimposed baskets, a flat container for collecting run-off water can be placed underneath.
The growing boxes are filled with good compost soil, and more sandy sowing and cactus soil is added to the soil for the herbs. The soil is covered with a bark cover that prevents moisture from evaporating and keeps weeds at bay.
Cultures can be watered safely when too much water drains off into the pots below. Thanks to good irrigation, the vegetable garden can cope without everyday care even in the summer heat. When the boxes are emptied in the fall, it is easy to keep them and the frames stacked on top of each other for the next growing season.
The large growth box is created from rectangular mortar pans. A few fair holes are drilled in the bottom to remove too much irrigation water. An elongated wooden frame is knitted under the saw. On the bottom of the receipt and garbage bag, cut a strip of frost and on top
pour a layer of pot gravel.
For the growing box to be built on the balcony, you need:
- drilling ground (eg 50 x 50 mm)
- glossy outdoor furniture paint (eg Miranol, Tikkurila)
- tinted wood oil (eg Valtti, Tikkurila)
- metal wire baskets
- frosty mortar
- drill and screwdriver
- paint brush and little roller
Here’s how to make a growth box:
1. Saw four strips with the dimensions of the basket, grind the sawn ends.
2. Place the bars on a level square: two below, two on top. Take a cross dimension so that the lines of the frame come straight.
3. Drill a hole in each corner for the screw. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver and ensure the straightness of the lines with a cross gauge. Add other screws to lock the frame.
4. If necessary, treat the frames with tinted wood oil twice. Wood oil protects wood from moisture.
