The Polish version of the Google Assistant has been with us for quite a long time, since January 2019. However, there’s a good chance you still don’t know all of its useful features. Here are a few gems. Note: some of them only work on Android.
The Google Assistant will check what is displayed on your screen
Screen Search is my absolute favorite Assistant feature.
Sample usage scenario. I fire up Facebook and I see a post about “Team Fortress 2”.
I don’t know what I’m talking about, so I want to search for information on this title. Normally I would have to run a search engine and “google” everything manually, but there is an easier way. Just wake up the Assistant and click “what can be seen on my screen?”.
The assistant himself picks up from the context that I am interested in the game and displays links to its description, trailer or social media profiles.
Searching for information on anything is so easy. I often use this feature when browsing Netflix when I want to find more details about featured videos.
By default, this feature is disabled. To activate it, just run the Assistant and say the command “what can be seen on my screen?”. The virtual helper will guide you to the appropriate option in the settings.
The Google Assistant will execute every command before you even say a word
Google created its Assistant primarily with voice interaction in mind. But what if you want to use its possibilities quietly? You can enter all commands manually, but it is easier to use the Action Blocks application created by Google.
Action Blocks allows you to create widgets, when clicked, predefined commands are automatically triggered. Just type in any command and it will be done right away by tapping the widget.
What can the mentioned application do? Everything an Assistant can do. You can prepare widgets “what will the weather be like tomorrow?”, “Call mum”, “turn on the radio” or “turn off the lights in the bedroom” so that you do not have to say the commands aloud each time.
The Google Assistant will recognize the song you hum
Are you using music recognition apps like Shazam or SoundHound? In total, you do not have to, because this is the function of the Google Assistant. Just wake it up and ask “what is this song?”.
Best of all, the song you’re looking for doesn’t even have to be playing in the background. The assistant is great at recognizing the usual humming.
In order not to have to say “what song is this?” Every time, you can turn it into a widget using the Action Blocks app mentioned earlier.
The Google Assistant will execute several commands in one go
If you want to do several things at once, it can be a pain to say each command in turn. However, the Rutyna function, which came to the Assistant in Polish some time ago, comes to the rescue.
Routines allow you to easily program a sequence of commands that will be executed after one command is given. Example? A simple slogan “hey Google, good night” is enough for the Assistant to turn off the light, present the weather forecast for the next day, lower the ring volume and turn on the sounds to help you fall asleep.
This is another function that can be combined with Action Blocks. Thus, the entire sequence of processes can be initiated by simply clicking on the widget.
Google Assistant is your translator
Are you in a foreign country and you can’t get along with the natives? You don’t need a separate app because the Google Assistant has a great real-time call translation feature built in.
If you say “hey Google, be my translator” and choose any language pair, the Assistant will automatically translate all statements back and forth. You do not need to select a new input language each time.
