MagentaTV is regularly given the highest praise in our IPTV tests. If you want to use the extensive TV and streaming offer, you can also choose an Apple TV from the 4th generation (4K or HD) as a receiving device as an alternative to the Telekom hardware.

MagentaTV runs on it as an app and offers almost the same range of functions as on the media receiver or the MagentaTV box. Just controlling it with the filigree Apple remote control, especially the 1st generation Apple TV 4K, is not for everyone.

This is where Telekom comes in with its own solution: if you order an Apple TV 4K to buy or rent for 10 euros / per month from the Bonn-based company, you will also receive the MagentaTV remote control. The tax bar is also available separately for 40 euros, in the local shops or on the Telekom website, but here with shipping costs.

Fits comfortably in your hand

The telecom solution is characterized by a significantly larger volume, which makes it more secure in the hand. The plastic housing doesn’t slip through your fingers as easily as the flat Apple part, which is largely made of high-quality, but non-slip aluminum. In addition, the Telekom illuminates the buttons when they are in use, which makes it easier to control them in the twilight in the evening.

The Telekom remote control comes with a clearly structured keypad that offers more direct selection options than the Apple original. Telekom has taken over the Siri button for activating voice control from Apple. Likewise, the menu button, which always leads to the higher-level menu of the app within an application such as MagentaTV or Netflix, and the button with the symbolized television, which, like the original, opens the main menu of Apple tvOS at any time and shows an overview of all installed apps.

Separate buttons for EPG and program change

Added value for MagentaTV customers with Telekom control: The EPG (Electronic Program Guide), which shows the current and upcoming TV program at a glance, can be called up directly via “Guide”.

At the top, next to the rocker switch for volume, there is also a button for zapping through the TV program. In the middle there is a control cross with four context-dependent selection positions and confirmation in the middle. This is primarily used to control non-Telekom content and, like the rest of the buttons, convinces with good pressure points and precise control.

The conclusion is a row of three at the very bottom, which not only enables start / stop but also fast forward or rewind.

By the way, if you are considering using the Telekom remote control in addition to the Apple original, we will unfortunately have to disappoint you: Only one control unit can be coupled.

Conclusion: more safety in operation

The Telekom solution is based on classic remote controls with clearly structured buttons, which should make operation easier for many MagentaTV customers. Fast zapping through the TV program and all other functions can also be managed with the Apple original, but you need more sensitivity and, especially with the first Apple TV 4K, which still relies on a touch field, a steady hand.
