Macron appoints Jean Castex as new Prime Minister of France Abroad

55-year-old Castex has recently been in charge of easing French measures against the corona virus. Previously, he was a member of the parliament of the Pyrénées-Orientales and Languedoc-Roussillon regions, and was mayor. He was also chairman of the National Sports Agency. Castex is a member of the center-right LR party and before that of its predecessor, the UMP.

Bloomberg news agency writes that the appointment of the unknown newcomer Castex is significant. Macron is said to have chosen someone with Castex who will not challenge and overshadow him. The now retired Philippe recently passed Macron in the popularity polls.

New government

Castex has to assemble a new cabinet. This should, among other things, give substance to the environmental and climate reforms that Macron announced earlier this week. Macron did that after a significant defeat in the municipal elections on Sunday. In addition, his liberal party LREM lost many voters to the green EELV.
