Lula wins but falls short and there will be a second round in Brazil

It must be remembered, however, that all the polls, throughout the electoral campaign, had predicted a clear victory for the ex-unionist, which placed him even in a position to win an absolute majority. Therefore, in a way, Bolsonaro comes out strengthened, since no survey indicated that he would be able to show the strength of resistance that the ballot boxes have given him. The extreme right takes a breather and prepares, with morale in the clouds, to face the four-week electoral campaign for a second round full of uncertainties. Lula, who ruled the country between 2003 and 2011, is also gaining momentum and wants to take the reins of Brazil again.

The day passed with a mixture of tension, due to the fear that there would be a trickle of attacks and incidents caused by the extreme right, and hope on the part of Lula’s followers, to settle the dispute at the first opportunity. The very long queues, of several islands and hours in the big capitals, have been repeated throughout the continental geography – also abroad – in a country where voting is compulsory. As happens every four years, having to choose up to five positions (president, governor, one or two senators, federal representative and representative in each state) has slowed down the process a lot.

Bolsonaro’s furious attacks on the electronic voting system – brandishing, without any evidence, the specter of electoral fraud – have had a direct impact, as the election schedule has been unified for the first time without taking into account the different spindles and, at the same time, the scrutiny has been done in real time, as an example of maximum transparency.

A useful and punishing vote

For many Brazilians, these elections were understood as a kind of plebiscite between democracy and authoritarianism. In this sense, Lula would have known how to take advantage of the votes of frustration against Bolsonaro: a majority of voters were fed up with his presidency, above all, based on the genocidal management of the pandemic, which has cost the lives of 686,000 Brazilians , and a practically national trauma. In this sense, the vote of anger, often from non-traditional voters of the Workers’ Party, has converged on the figure of Lula to punish the entire work of the far-right government with an exemplary defeat.

But the resilience of Bolsonaro, who has dribbled the possibility of one impeachment throughout the legislature, he would have had enough of a ceiling to keep breathing. It has a loyal electorate, permanently mobilized with the fuel of a fake news machine, tireless in the production of content. However, there has been a manifest inability of Bolsonaro to expand his own bubble. During the days before the elections, in fact, the disintegration of Bolsonaro’s political allies, who did not want to share the stage at the rallies, was staged. Ministers appointed by Bolsonaro have even refused to participate in campaign events. The internal isolation of the current president has shown the weakness with which he has faced the election, despite having put to work many months ago all the federal public machinery at his service. The video recorded by Donald Trump from inside his private jet asking for the vote for his ally in the day of reflection can be considered the most explicit support received by the far-right president.

While Lula has collected a trickle of international support, – it reinforces that he is still highly valued outside the country and that his time in prison has not tarnished his CV -, Bolsonaro, despite the victory of the extreme right in Italy , has felt pretty much alone since Joe Biden occupied the White House.
