Lukashenko’s proposed amendments to the Constitution – a game to deceive the West?

The proposed amendments to the constitution were announced on Monday on the Presidential and National Legislative Websites of Belarus.

The amendments stipulate that one person should not be able to hold the presidency for more than 2 consecutive terms, he or she should not be under 40 years of age and should have lived in Belarus for the last 20 years to stand as a candidate.

Experts believe that this wording is directed against the current opposition, most of whose representatives have left the country.

The constitutional amendments also stipulate that presidential decrees may not contradict the laws of the country, and outgoing presidents may not be held liable for actions and decisions taken during their term.
