Although BMW, unlike most of its competitors, emphasizes that it would still be a shame to bury internal combustion engines, huge resources are also being mobilized in Munich to bring new-generation electric cars to market. More than € 400 million has been invested in the Dingolfing plant to start series production of the iX, and preparations have already begun to produce the next-generation 5 and 7 electric versions. However, while the 5 and 7 are two of the big classics on offer, the iX is entering a whole new field, as it is absolutely out of line with its shape and construction. And the work of chief designer Dirk Müller-Stolz is anything but unusual.
The slightly brittle, forward-looking, 5-centimeter-less 5-meter-long front of the model is dominated by oversized kidneys, which have the interesting thing of being scratch-free coated. In warm, sunny weather, minor injuries go away on their own, but with a hair dryer we can say goodbye to scratches almost immediately. However, there are several interesting things about the iX, such as the front cover cannot be opened, the windshield washer fluid can be filled by opening the brand logo, and a matte finish cannot be assigned to the model because such surfaces simply generate more noise than conventional ones. And it goes straight to the point that the interior is meant to be a kind of enclosure in which you can travel as stress-free as possible – this is the first Bavarian model designed from the inside out.
Unlike any BMW to date, the cabin, the peculiar play of shapes and materials, is all that one understands when one is already sitting in it. Although the seat seats are not as long as in a 7, and the seating position itself is quite different, we feel like we’re sitting in a modern, minimalist-style living room. The use of materials is one of the most interesting points of the iX, as new, unprecedented textures have emerged, and the raw materials used for flooring and carpets include recycled fishing nets for sustainability. In addition to the needle-sharp monitors, the all-new on-board system also shows that BMW has given in fathers and a much larger rear legroom than the X5, which has similar dimensions. One of the reasons for this is that the technology is not space-consuming at all, with the new 5th generation eDrive drive chain housing the electric motor, control electronics and powertrain in a common housing.
While both the 326-horsepower base model 40 and the 523-horsepower 50 version are twin-engined, the battery capacity is different, as the more muscular model boasts a net 105 kWh package instead of a 76 kWh battery, so according to the WLTP method You can also cover 630 kilometers between two embankments. Although this is difficult to achieve in reality based on the test, it is necessary to allow the power consumption to be fast with a lightning charge of 200 kW (if such a column is found).
As far as the driving experience is concerned, no matter how low the center of gravity is due to the 500kg battery pack, the iX’s significant weight of 2.4-2.6 tonnes can be felt when braking and cornering. At the same time, the 523-horsepower version doesn’t even accelerate, but rather is already able to jump in space, competing with any V8 sports sedan in terms of torque flexibility. The downhill at 200 km / h is as smooth as the whole car, you can barely hear anything about the operation of the electric motors, and of course the suspension makes it all about comfort in the iX – simply a different driving experience gives like the big BMWs so far. Of course, the ticket to the island of tranquility is not cheap, as a minimum of HUF 28 million has to be discounted in order for someone to enjoy the services of the novelty every day.
