Chronocrimes or in English Timecrimes is a Spanish sci-fi thriller in which Nacho Vigalondo signs the direction and screenplay and interprets one of the supporting roles. The film premiered at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. Unlike Hollywood high-budget thrillers, which often know how to disappoint viewers, Spanish thrillers have a large fan base, primarily because of the original plots, unexpected unfoldings and specific atmosphere.
At the beginning of this film, we follow Hector, who explores the surroundings of his estate with binoculars, and an attractive woman changing in the woods catches his eye. Intrigued, he goes to look for her and finds her attacked, and he himself becomes the victim of an attack by a mysterious man whose head is covered with bandages. While fleeing, he encounters a house that turns out to be a research laboratory, where a scientist persuades him to hide in a metal pool with a lid. After leaving it, Hector notices that there is a double in his house…
Hector inadvertently becomes part of the time loop and must stop his other self from still existing. As we are used to, the idea of time travel is a paradox with apparent or logical contradictions, so it is inevitable that such a trip will make a real mess in the shop. Chronocrimes it works on the good old principle in which a man who travels through time makes a mistake that he wants to correct by re-traveling through time, which is the right recipe for disaster in the announcement.
As expected from a Spanish thriller, this film is not idle. The script consists of only a few characters and the plot is limited to two houses and a small forest, but the story manages to keep our attention all the time. Although the term time travel usually goes hand in hand with confusion, this film is relatively easy to follow and everything we watch takes place quickly. I’m not saying that there are no confusing moments, especially when we try to figure out whose actions are the reason for specific events in the film, but not to the extent I expected.
Hector’s actions are inevitably explained by his desire to maintain a consistent time sequence of events, which would, in essence, deny his entire existence if he were interrupted. Although he initially seems like a repulsive type, it is difficult not to gain sympathy for Hector’s continuous efforts to repair the damage he unknowingly causes with his travels. Hector could not sit still for an hour and allow everything to be sorted out, but he had to intervene, so his actions only confirm that every change of the past can never be good.
This is the type of film that gets better with each new viewing, because the final outcome, which chronologically sorts out everything we followed in the film, clarifies all the possible illogicalities that we encounter while watching. I liked that the author keeps the situation under control, in the sense that he does not allow logical or illogical complications of time travel to affect the pace of the film or our attention. The time plots are not forced but leave the impression that they are spontaneous and mysterious, everything is quite decently accompanied and in a technical sense, I would especially praise the people in charge of makeup.
Chronocrimes is a low-budget Spanish thriller that is very well designed and full of black humor and bizarre twists – an intelligent film about time travel that does not allow us to lose our attention.
my final grade: 9/10
