Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič won the Giro d’Italia for the first time in his career. British Mark Cavendish (Astana Kazakhstan Team) won the final stage of the 106th edition with the goal in Rome on Sunday.

Alex Kirsch (Trek-Segafredo) from Luxembourg finished second behind the 37-year-old Cavendish, and local Filippo Fiorelli (Green Project-Bardiani) was third. The British stage winner recorded his 54th Grand Tour victory and his 17th at the Giro.

The Portuguese Joao Almeida (SAE Team Emirates) finished third with a deficit of 1:15 minutes. Fourth home Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) and fifth Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) have already lost more than four minutes.

In the final stage, 70 kilometers before the finish line, three competitors Cesare Benedetti (Bora-hansgrohe), Maxime Bouet (Akrea) and Toms Skujinš (Trek-Segafredo) tried to escape.
However, the peloton did not allow them to create an advantage of more than 45 seconds. The pack caught up with them after an hour and a half during the run to the last lap.
Four kilometers before the finish line, Derek Gee tried again, but he didn’t succeed either. He succeeded in the mass sprint after a dominant performance by Cavendish, who was helped in the end by Luis Leon Sanchez and Thomas.
