Long-term deputy of Lembergs Janis Vitolins was elected Mayor of Ventspils

Janis Vitolins, who is a party member of Lembergs in Latvijai un Ventspilij, and Bruno Yurshevichs (New Conservative Party).

As a result of voting, 7 deputies voted “for” Vitolins’ candidacy, 6 abstained. Bruno Yurshevich’s candidacy was supported by 5 deputies, 6 were against, one abstained.

Janis Vitolins held the post of deputy chairman of the Ventspils City Council since 1996, always elected from the party of Lembergs Latvijai un Ventspilij. Aivars Lembergs has been the head of the Ventspils City Council since 1994.

Let us remind you that on July 1 the Ventspils City Council failed to elect a chairman. Aivars Lembergs, who is in prison, was nominated for the post of head of the council. Due to the fact that Lembergs himself could not participate in the meeting, a stalemate arose during the voting: 6 deputies voted “for” the long-term mayor, 6 deputies were against.

As a result, the meeting was adjourned until July 5.

In total, there are 13 deputies in the Ventspils City Council, of which (including Lembergs, who is prohibited from participating in council meetings and using the Internet, computers, mobile phones in prison) were elected from Latvijai un Ventspilij. Also, 2 deputies each from the Latvijas attīstībai party and the combined list of “New Unity” and the Latvian Association of Regions were elected to the Ventspils City Council, 1 deputy each – from the New Conservative Party and the National Association.

It is not known which of the deputies ensured the minimum majority of votes for the candidate from Latvijai un Ventspilij Janis Vitolins: the voting was secret.

Earlier, after the meeting on July 1, the deputies from Latvijas attīstībai Edgars Cheporius and Normunds Pupols, as well as the deputy from the National Association Karlis Vochtavs, asserted that they had not been asked to support a particular candidate for mayor.

According to Cheporjus, Latvijai un Ventspilij invited Latvijas attīstībai to negotiations even before Ligo, but the offer was not accepted. Latvijas attīstībai insisted on broader negotiations between all political forces elected to the Ventspils Council.

In turn, the head of the Ventspils branch of the National Association Andis Zarins said that the party is open for negotiations, adding that “everything is discussed.” At the same time, the National Association emphasized that it would not support the candidacies for the post of mayor of Aivars Lembergs himself or his wife Kristina Lemberga, who was also elected to the Ventspils City Council, reports LETA.

On July 5, at 17.00, the Ventspils City Council will meet in order to elect the vice-mayor.
