Local accommodation is saving some villages from disappearing

The number of new local accommodations in the interior of the country has been growing since the beginning of the year, benefiting the districts in the interior, which have a positive balance between units that require an operating license and those that cancel the activity. Guarda, Bragança, Vila Real and Viseu are the districts that register the greatest growth.

In Lamegal, a small village in the municipality of Pinhel, in the district of Guarda, there are four houses that are being recovered. The old granite buildings, abandoned for years, are being restored to house local accommodation units. The Lamegal Social Center project, which is celebrating 40 years, is financed by community funds and allowed for the purchase of houses for values “between €500 and €5,000”, says Ricardo Capelo, president of the association.
