LIVE | ‘Half of former IC patients have complaints years after admission’ | Inland

Many former intensive care patients experience new physical and mental complaints in the year after admission, the Radboudumc in Nijmegen concluded after an investigation. This concerns half of these patients, according to a study in which thousands of patients were followed up to five years after their IC admission.

Physical complaints, such as fatigue, reduced physical condition and stiffness in joints, are mentioned most often by the 2345 participating IC patients. They were admitted between June 2016 and June 2019. Some of the former IC patients also suffer from mental complaints, such as feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as post-traumatic stress disorders.

More than 12 percent have cognitive problems such as memory and concentration problems. “All these complaints have an impact on the daily life of these patients. For example, about 40 percent indicate that they have started working less due to the complaints, or are still on sick leave a year later or that they have given up their job themselves ”, according to the Nijmegen university hospital.

The research was carried out on patients in the hospitals Bernhoven (Uden), Jeroen Bosch Hospital (Den Bosch), Amphia (Breda), Rijnstate (Arnhem), Maas Hospital (Boxmeer), Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital and the Radboudumc (both Nijmegen).
