[L’instant tech] How FM Logistic designed an exoskeleton for its order pickers

With the rise of e-commerce, the number of logistics depots is multiplying and with them, the recruitment of order pickers. A difficult job: every day, the pickers lift more than a hundred parcels. Within FM Logistic (29,000 employees and 1.4 billion euros in turnover), the weight of parcels is estimated at between 6 and 18 kilos. Result: the cumulative load can exceed two tons per day for an employee!

To prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), the company therefore sought to acquire exoskeletons to equip its employees. Problem : “We tested several existing equipment on the market, but none met our needs”, says Audrey Thum, in charge of occupational health and safety in the company. These existing exoskeletons often offer assistance for very specific tasks, which do not correspond to the variety of movements of order pickers: parcels of different sizes, reception of the load at different body heights, variable weight, etc. Hence the merger of FM Logistic with the Technological University of Compiègne (UTC) in 2019 to develop an exoskeleton specially dedicated to handling.

Three years of development
