[L’industrie c’est fou] When Spider-Man weaves its web in the world of watchmaking

One of comic book fans’ most beloved superheroes, Spider-Man, returned to the big screen on May 31 in the animated feature Spider-Man : Across The Spider-Verse. The perfect opportunity for the Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet to present its new creation a few days earlier in Dubai: the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Spider-Man, made in tribute to Peter Parker!

Although the project is the subject of much mockery on social networks, it is far from being similar to one of those hideous plastic Spider-Man watches that children like to wear on their wrist… Indeed, the figurine of the spider-man in gray gold, made in three dimensions, alone required 50 hours of work. The costume of the superhero, embodied in the cinema by Tom Holland, was laser engraved and painted by hand.

The Manufacture in Le Brassus, which has just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its flagship model, the Royal Oak, states on its website that the model, designed in titanium and black ceramic and presented in a 42 millimeter case, is equipped with a hand-wound caliber 2974 based on the caliber 2948. It also indicates that the watch, sold in a limited edition of 250 pieces at a price of around 220,000 euros, has a black rubber strap with a titanium folding clasp and a second red rubber strap, in reference to the character’s costume, is supplied with.

Another watch, unique this time, and baptized Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Black Suit Spider-Man, was sold at auction in Dubai for 6.2 million dollars, a record for an Audemars Piguet watch. This sum will be donated to the American non-profit organizations First Book and Ashoka. It pays homage to the black coat worn for the first time by Peter Parker in Spider-Man’s black costume, appeared in 1984, and seems much easier to assume on his wrist than the watch sold in limited edition…

But who would have thought that the Marvel hero would weave his web in the world of luxury watchmaking? If the creation of Audemars Piguet surprised more than one, it is not the first of its kind. In 2021, the Swiss watchmaker unveiled a Royal Oak celebrating the superhero Black Panther. Faced with the media echo met by this creation and the Royal Oak Spider-Man, it’s a safe bet that the watchmaker will repeat the experience. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor… Bets remain open on the selection of the next Marvel character!
