The transition to green mobility favors the development of several means of locomotion, including the velomobile. The Dutch company Velomobiel specializes in the manufacture of this type of bicycle and has just designed what could be one of the fastest velomobiles with its latest model called Snoek.
On a velomobile, the cyclist is almost lying down and is surrounded by a fairing. The objective is twofold because thanks to its shape, the velomobile gains in aerodynamics and also helps protect the cyclist from the elements. Velomobiel has already created several models such as the Strada, the Mango or the Quest.
Designed for speed
The Snoek takes its name from a species of mackerel, a slender fish found in the southern oceans. Regarding its shape, the Snoek also has a frontal area 20% smaller than that of the Quest model. Like the Quest, its wheels are inside the body which represents a gain in aerodynamics.
The Snoek is made of carbon fiber and with its 20 kg, it is almost half the weight of standard velomobiles, which weigh between 30 to 40 kg. Usually, velomobiles are not really adapted to climb uneven because its potential is deployed on flat terrain but some models of the Snoek will be equipped with an electric motor.
Some technical characteristics
The Snoek copies several existing devices on cars: it has a side mirror and front and rear suspension. It is also equipped with a complete lighting system and can warn when approaching bends thanks to turn signals, still under development.
The velomobile also includes Sturmey Archer drum brakes and Shimano and SLX Shadow derailleurs. The dimensions of the front wheels are 20 inches and 28 inches for the rear wheel. The cyclist can also protect himself thanks to a removable hard top.
More than a year and a half of waiting and 8,000 euros per unit …
Although production of Snoek models is not yet running at full speed, 22 orders have already been placed. To answer it, Theo van Andel, the founder of Velomobiel foresees a period of one and a half years. In addition to being patient, you will have to pay at least 8,000 € to purchase this velomobile. One of Velomobiel’s customers had the privilege of being able to test the Snoek which allowed him to easily drive at 60 km / hour for a long time.
