Suara.com – PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) has suspended the Indonesian Liga 1 for the 2022-2023 season for one week. This was because of the riots that occurred at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, after the Arema FC versus Persebaya match, Saturday (1/10).
Several facilities at the stadium with a capacity of 46,000 spectators were also badly damaged.
“We announced the decision after we received directions from the General Chairperson of PSSI (Mochamad Iriawan). This was done out of respect for all parties, pending the investigation process from PSSI,” said LIB President Director Akhmad Hadian Lukita in a press release in Jakarta, Sunday morning.
“We are concerned and deeply regret the incident. We share our condolences and hopefully this will be a valuable lesson for all of us,” said Akhmad.
The riot started when thousands of Arema FC supporters, Aremania, pushed onto the field after their favorite team lost 2-3 to Persebaya.
The police then fired tear gas inside the pitch which left many supporters unconscious and having difficulty breathing.
The fallen supporters created panic in the stadium area. The number of supporters who need medical assistance is not proportional to the number of medical personnel on standby at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.
Many supporters complained of shortness of breath from tear gas and being trampled when they tried to leave the stadium stands.
