Will the foldable mobile be a footnote in the phone’s history? Yes, at least if LG has something to say about. Their LG Rollable, which will actually be released later this year, does not fold out with a hinge – it is rolled up.
LG, which previously received attention for its rollable TV, now seems ready to offer a similar design in a smaller format. Rolled up, Rollable looks like a regular smartphone, but it can be hoisted up and take the form of a mini-tablet.
Apart from a short video clip, the name of the device and that it will premiere later this year, we do not know much more. What quality can we expect on the screen? How does the scrollable technology work? How sensitive is it to dust and moisture? And how big a hole will it make in your wallet? These are questions that LG does not currently provide answers to.
The South Korean electronics giant has instead chosen to market another eye-catching smartphone at the virtual version of the electronics trade fair CES to a much greater extent: LG Wing. It is a two-in-one screen where the top can be rotated over the other whereupon Wing assumes the shape of a T.
Wing has its points, such as using the lower part as a handle for better stability when recording video, but it may not be too daring to guess that it will not be anything more than an exotic feature on the market. Roll-up phones, on the other hand, may well be of interest to a wider audience if they can provide the performance and ruggedness we expect from a modern smartphone.
LG is not alone in looking at scrollable technology for mobiles. Some of the rivals in the field are Oppo and TCL. But with Rollable, LG is expected to be the first to enter the market.
