Lexus’ environmentally friendly side-by-side vehicle – Car Engine – burns hydrogen

Lexus has unveiled the ROV (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle) study, which arrives as a unique hydrogen-powered vehicle with near-zero emissions and exceptional off-road capability. The novelty faithfully reflects Lexus ’commitment to coexisting with an exciting driving experience and a carbon-free society focused on responsible mobility.

As part of the Lexus ROV Concept, the design team has developed a vehicle that performs well in all sorts of natural environments. The car bears all the characteristics of off-road vehicles, such as the free suspension, the roll bar or the chunky off-road tires that make it impossible to stop on muddy roads. Its dimensions are 3120 mm (length), 1725 mm (width), 1800 mm (height). As the starting point for Lexus ’“ people-centric ”philosophy, the design team wanted to create the four-wheelers that people expect from a luxury car manufacturer, all while maintaining the robustness and off-road capabilities of ROVs. Designed to protect the occupants, Lexus ’iconic grille and enough room for the first suspensions have been designed. In addition, the front fenders were designed to provide protection against all stray gravel and mud splashes. The suspension cover attached to the rear hydrogen tank protects the functional parts and expresses the sense of durability typical of Lexus SUV models. The dark bronze paintwork, together with the lightweight body structure and suspension shapes for both comfort and fun off-roading, is the result of careful machining. The Lexus L-motif also appears in the front and rear headlights, while the LEXUS label on the rear refers to the brand’s latest design language. Following the Tazuna concept in the cabin, there is a simple clock from which the information needed by the driver can be read immediately, while the pilot focuses on driving.

The new concept brings outstanding build quality and a sense of luxury to Lexus, both inside and out, never before seen in an ROV. Luxurious details include a leather steering wheel, a beautifully shaped shift knob and seats that smooth out large bumps on the go with their own suspension. The seats are upholstered in durable synthetic leather. Achieving the expected off-road capabilities is Lexus ’first hydrogen-powered internal combustion power source that meets the manufacturer’s stringent requirements for quietness, durability and reliability.

While pursuing carbon-neutral goals, Lexus is passionately committed to the driving experience. The ROV Concept simultaneously delivers the exciting melodies and responsive torque rise of internal combustion resources thanks to the rapid burning rate of hydrogen – which Lexus says is a perfect fit for an ROV. This hydrogen-powered ROV concept is the result of Lexus ’desire to preserve the true off-road experience for the low-carbon society of the future. For a field experience, the one-liter hydrogen engine, which works on the same principle as petrol, is powered by compressed hydrogen from a high-pressure tank to the engine via a direct hydrogen injector. Importantly, Lexus ’new hydrogen engine produces near-zero emissions as it burns negligible amounts of engine oil during operation.

With a strong tubular body and a large spring-loaded suspension, the driver can enjoy the natural movement of the car, experience the moment and get wherever he wants. The dynamic and comfortable driving design, agility solutions and fast hydrogen engine responses make the Lexus ROV with outstanding off-road capabilities truly enjoyable.
“Lexus ROV is our answer to the growing passion and adventure of luxury consumers for nature. As a concept, it combines our desire to develop lifestyle-oriented products thanks to our ongoing research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. In addition to offering an exciting concept for driving, it has near-zero emissions thanks to its hydrogen-powered engine, ”says Spiros Fotinos, European Head of Lexus.
