let’s go for the new File Explorer

After spending a head at Microsoft’s Build 2023 conference last month, the redesign of theFile Explorer pour Windows 11 first appeared in build 23475 (Windows 11 Insider Preview; Dev channel).

The expected modernization takes advantage of the rewrite of the code base, as part of a migration to the Windows App SDK (the successor to Universal Windows Platform) and the UI library WinUI 3.

Changes to the interface better align File Explorer with the overall design of Windows 11, including tabs. Emphasis is also placed on the address bar and the search field

A revisited welcome

Microsoft indicates that the new address bar recognizes and distinguishes between local folders and folders in the cloud, thanks to the integrated status. For OneDrive, the address bar includes sync status and remaining storage space display.

For users logged into an Azure Active Directory account, recommended files are displayed as a carousel and with support for file thumbnails coming later.

Available by default to users logged into Windows with a Microsoft account, Quick Access folders, recent files, and favorites get an improved experience with WinUI.

Native RGB lighting control

With more additions coming to the masses later this year, the new File Explorer is currently rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders.

Build 23475 also allows gamers to directly control from settings, RGB lighting for devices with the HID LampArray standard.

A dynamic lighting feature supports a wide range of Razer keyboards and mice, while Asus peripherals are coming soon. This is just the beginning, since Microsoft cites Acer, HP, HyperX, Logitech and Twinkly as partners.
