Seventeen mayors and PSD leaders from the Porto district declared this Friday to support Paulo Rangel in the race for the party’s leadership, considering it the right profile to win the country and break with the “apparent conformity” to the current government.
“More than ever, it is necessary to unite the party to face the next electoral cycle, with subscribers understanding that comrade Paulo Rangel has the right profile for this mission”, reads the note released and subscribed, among others, by the president of the Câmara da Maia and President of the Political Committee of the PSD in that city, António Silva Tiago.
The signatories of this support also highlight the political experience, national and European, of Paulo Rangel, his vision, modernity and assertiveness as qualities that the party needs to grow and win the legislative ones.
Stressing that the choices of PSD militants and leaders put Portugal’s best interests first, the subscribers see Rangel as “the only one” “capable of galvanizing not only the party, but also the Portuguese, who see themselves in a social -modern democracy”.
For these Social Democrats, the party faces the challenge of building a real alternative to the Government and taking on a serious, firm and constructive opposition to the policies developed by António Costa, who has impoverished the country and is hostage to the ideological options of the radical left .The PSD, they argue, needs to be the protagonist of a solid and credible political project, which favors the presentation of concrete proposals to solve the real problems of the citizens.
“Considering the apparent conformism to the current government, the PSD has the obligation to change the paradigm of opposition and to have the ambition to recover the lost hope of the Portuguese, putting Portugal back on the path of development”, they declare.
Paulo Rangel’s supporters include names such as Antonino de Sousa – President of the Penafiel City Council and José Luís Gaspar – President of the Amarante City Council; as well as councilors such as Vila Nova de Gaia, Trofa, Gondomar, Penafiel, Felgueiras, Lousada, Marco de Canaveses, Santo Tirso and Vila do Conde.
Paulo Rangel publicly presented his candidacy this Friday in a session in which he said he is convinced that he can “unite the PSD, promote its growth and win the 2023 legislatives”.
The MEP contested the view that his candidacy would represent any disloyalty or “usurpation” to the current president, stressing that the party is in its usual normal calendar.“He had four years to show his leadership, at this point I understand that I am in a better position to be the best leader of the PSD”, he said, saying that there was no statement from him that could be seen as an attack on the leadership.
