Latvian authorities refused to officially rename Georgia following the example of Lithuania

In January, the Latvian Foreign Ministry sent a request to the State Language Center, which has a subcommittee on toponyms. The Foreign Ministry believes that the issue of the country’s name is not political, therefore it decided to get an expert assessment of linguists. Experts said that the word Gruzija has existed in the Latvian language for at least 130 years. There is no change in his foundation, the diplomats concluded.

Earlier, the Lithuanian authorities officially renamed Georgia, in documents in Lithuanian the country will be called Sakartvelo, reports Press.lv portal.

After that, the former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya called on Vilnius to change the official name of her homeland from Baltarùsija to Belarusià so that no one would have a “mistaken association with Russia.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis answered that if Belarus expresses such a wish, the Lithuanian authorities “will be happy to discuss this issue.”
