Latvian Ambassador on the European Prospects of Ukraine: The European Union does not want new problems

The EU member states lack “a common understanding of Ukraine’s European prospects,” said Latvian Ambassador to Kiev Juris Poikans.

According to the diplomat, EU membership is a matter of general agreement of the 27 member states of the community. At the same time, some of the countries “do not yet see any grounds for the enlargement of the European Union,” Poikans noted. He also added that those countries that do not object to the admission of new members have a desire “to see in the EU those states that are already ready to join,” the diplomat explained, adding that “no one wants to get new problems.”

At the same time, Poikans noted that, provided that reforms continue and “some progress” is achieved, Ukraine will probably be able to raise the issue of its accession both in Brussels and in other EU capitals. RIA Novosti.

Earlier in late August, Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said that Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova do not yet meet the conditions for joining the EU and for this they will need “20 years of work.”
