Budapest. When this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards, EMA, kicks off on Sunday, it will take place in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, and for a very special reason.

It is thus to support the country’s squeezed LGBTQ environment.

– After such a long time, I could not be happier that the EMA lands in Budapest, to what will surely be an extraordinary evening that will resonate globally.

That’s what Raffaele Annecchino, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Networks International, said in a statement back in October, according to the news agency dpa.

ViacomCBS Networks International is part of ViacomCBS, of which MTV is a part.

Hungary has introduced a derogatory law banning the dissemination of content that is considered to promote homosexuality to children under 18 years of age.

The law, which was passed on June 15 and came into force in July, also bans advertising that portrays homosexuality as part of a normal society.

The country’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has curtailed the rights of homosexuals and other minorities during his reign.

For example, in May last year, Parliament passed a law preventing transgender people from changing gender in their official papers.

Orbán has stated that the law from this year is not aimed at homosexuals, but is about protecting children.

Zsanett Szoke is a transvestite in her 40s. She has, according to her own statement, experienced more verbal assaults on the street than before.

– You can live with it, but I can clearly feel that things are moving in the direction that people have become more critical of us, she has previously stated to the news agency Reuters.

For the MTV Europe Music Awards, artists such as Ed Sheeran, OneRepublic and Måneskin will perform.

Ed Sheeran is also nominated in the category Best Artist along with among others the stars Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.

In addition, there must be a winner among the nominees in categories such as Best Group and Biggest Fans.

The host of this year’s EMA is the American rapper Saweetie.
