La Palma is full of tourists to photograph the volcano

BarcelonaThe three days of celebration that allows the bridge of All Saints to be noticed in the island of La Palma that, far from beginning to recover a certain tranquility while the eruption of the volcano Cumbre Vieja continues, has been filled of tourists. The island has about 10,000 visitors from this Saturday to Monday, which is why the Cabildo of La Palma has had to put things in order. A shuttle bus system has been set up during the bridge – vehicles called in the Canary Islands buses– from the old airport of the island to the viewpoint of Tajuya, where tourists gather to photograph the volcano.

The technical director of the Canary Islands volcanic emergency plan, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, explains that the measure to have shuttle buses is for safety and to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles. In fact, the presence of tourists does not seem to bother the authorities. Quite the contrary: Morcuende thanks the visitors who go to La Palma because with their presence “they show that the island is safe”.

But the agglomeration of tourists coincided this Saturday with the day that La Palma experienced the biggest earthquake. A magnitude 5 seismic movement has been recorded, according to the scale of the National Geographic Institute, which places it as the most important in the 41 days of eruption so far. Despite the record, the director of the IGN in the Canary Islands, María José Blanco, says that historical records show that the island has reached a movement of magnitude 5.8. In addition, earthquakes are expected to increase in intensity and there will be some magnitude 6 seismic movement.

New wash to the sea

As for the volcano, which is considered to be continuing in a phase of stability, it has a new flow that is approaching the sea: it is the southern one, which continues to advance and has forced the evacuation of residents of the area of La Bombilla , who have not yet been able to go home to pick up their personal belongings. This flow that is moving the magma of the cone of the Cumbre Vieja has already been classified as the one that causes more material damage in the houses it swallows.

Morcuende admits that the south wind is also the most worrying, despite the evacuation of the places where it passes, because it has grown and is heading for the sea. Although the time to reach the water does not seem to be imminent, it is estimated that if the lava continues to move in the same direction it will affect desalination plants that supply water to crops in the area.

So far, according to data from the Copernicus satellite system, the volcano has devastated almost a thousand hectares of La Palma: it has destroyed 2,532 buildings and endangered 149 more. The numbers will rise even more.
