La Mercè School, one of the 100 centers chosen to study insectivorous fauna in the state

Birds in the Cloud

The La Mercè School in Martorell will take part in the project Birds in the cloud, which is responsible for monitoring the insectivorous fauna of the area where it is carried out. This project is led by the IberCivis Foundation, which promotes different initiatives in various fields. In this case, the project Birds in the cloud wants to monitor state insectivorous wildlife and needs the involvement of students from all over. In the Catalan case, the La Mercè School in Martorell will participate with fifth-graders from Primary School, although students from all courses will also come into play.

Professor Andrés García is in charge of leading the project with the students of the Fifth C class of the Martorell center, a group that has already started working on it. The project focuses on the observation of birds and bats that can enter the house they will set up and which will provide sensors to control factors such as humidity or pressure. This data will help students to know the behavior of animals both inside and outside the house, and will allow them to make a thorough control even when they are not physically there to observe how they behave.

A multidisciplinary process

La Mercè School will receive a booth to install in the vicinity of the center and will have to locate it near the school to begin with the observation. On the one hand, students will be able to collect data in situ, observing the behavior of the species they study. On the other hand, and in line with the project name, there will be data that will be linked directly to the database in the cloud, online. The teacher at La Mercè School, Andrés García, explains that the process for keeping records of their activity will be twofold.

Birds in the cloud it will not only involve fifth-year students, but will seek the complicity and help of other courses. García explains that “it is a transversal project” that can also be used by high school students who are preparing more specific works. “It is a project that will affect the whole school,” he said.

At the same time, this initiative strengthens the rank of STEAM. These acronyms refer to projects that unite science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (science, technology, engineering, art and maths, in English) and complete student learning. The teacher from Martorell explains that this work will arouse curiosity and motivation to discover how his research is progressing, a fact that will connect students from the first minute.

The school will receive the booth in the coming days and will begin with the observation and data collection project. Sending the records they collect will send them through LORAwan technology, which has been designed for low power consumption devices.
