Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti criticized the United Education Union, which has been on strike since August 25, because, he said, it is irresponsible to call only for salary increases, at a time when most children are functionally illiterate.

Prime Minister Kurti described the request for an additional 100 euros per month for employees’ salaries until the adoption and entry into force of the Law on Salaries as an absurd, irrational and arbitrary wish of the strikers.

Kurti said this at a press conference where he presented the new financial package, which includes 50 euros every month for public sector workers.

But, according to him, that package is related to the fight against inflation and has nothing to do with the request for the adoption of the Law on Wages.

– In Kosovo, when the PISA tests show that three quarters of children are functionally illiterate, blackmailing the Government, threatening the Government with the collapse of the state is absolute irresponsibility. Everyone loses from a strike. A day without learning for children is irresponsible behavior. Because of the illiterate and because of thinking only about salaries, our welfare lists are supplemented, or auxiliary or manual workers in Germany. We need to fix the education system, but you see what is happening, asking for money to bankrupt the country, to destroy the country. I call people to rationality, responsibility and teaching – said Kurti.

He said that there was no lack of social dialogue with the unions, but he stated that as prime minister he only meets with the president of the Union of Trade Unions, and not with the leaders of the trade union branches.
