Kürtener Splash-Bad: City council rejects request of the bath owner

The concerns of the Kürten sports clubs about their splash pool remain high even after the most recent council meeting. Wolfgang Ernst, Chairman of the Association for Popular Sports (VfB) Kürten, spoke of a “silver lining” in view of the fitness center plans at the pool and the preservation of the sports pool. “But that’s only half the truth.”

The announcement that one of the outdoor pools would be “surrounded” and used for non-swimmers was problematic. Between 50 and 60 toddlers are reliant on the shallow communication basins to get used to the water for the first time.

Parents protested had to wait two hours

Enabling children to learn to swim is a task for society as a whole. “The outdoor pool cannot be used to get used to the water.” Mayor Willi Heider (non-party) promised to take up the objection during the talks.

The 25 or so children and their parents who had come to the gym with posters for the council meeting had to wait almost two hours before Heider raised the issue at the council meeting.

“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves,” he explained to the visitors. Everyone in the council wanted the bathroom to be preserved. But unfortunately there could be no other decision than the main committee. And so it happened, without a debate: With the approval of the 2021 budget, the bathroom will receive an annual subsidy of 240,000 euros, up to now it was 210,000 euros.

Mayor is now consulting with bathroom advisor and owner

The pool operators had requested 600,000 euros to be paid by the municipality for 15 years. The owners are now aiming to convert parts of the bathroom (communication area) into a fitness center in order to reduce operating costs. These 9 million, which would arise in 15 years, Kürten could not afford, Michael Hardt (Greens) justified the rejection.

For the AfD Kürten, Wolfgang Steinberger had proposed the establishment of a support association based on the model of the Dabringhausen outdoor pool in a preliminary declaration. For the interests of the sports clubs, SPD councilor Jürgen Brückers, himself active for many years at the DLRG, took the floor at the meeting.

How are things going now? The mayor will talk to bathroom advisor Jörg Suchanka and owner Ibrahim Kabakci. The reshuffle should be accompanied by the community, said the mayor. Whether further things of a financial nature will result from this must be discussed. “I don’t know whether we will reach our goal.”
