Kovac talks about “fears of existence” among football professionals

Coach Niko Kovac from VfL Wolfsburg sees increasing fears about the sporting future or the next contract as a result of the Corona crisis, even among highly paid football professionals.

“The players also have existential fears. You see: There are many players on the market who have not found a club. The boys realize that. The good times are a bit over at the moment,” said the 50-year-old before the Bundesliga -Game against 1. FC Köln on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).

Kovac based his observation on the situation of those players who had little chance of playing time in the large squad of VfL Wolfsburg this summer and who therefore left the club in the transfer period that has just ended.

“We saw that every day: everyone who wasn’t necessarily in the thick of it is concerned,” explained the former Bayern coach. “The situation on the football market is not easy. Everything has become a little more difficult after Corona. Everyone is also afraid for their future. You could feel that, you could see that.”

The Wolfsburg have reduced their squad in recent weeks from 35 to currently 29 players. Kovac put the term “fear of the future” into perspective by saying: “When I talk about existential fears, I’m talking about families. There are players who only take care of themselves. But there are also players who take care of one big family. There’s more to it.”
