Florence (Italy) – Goalkeeper Tomáš Staněk will enter the Diamond League on Friday in Florence. He will be the only Czech athlete at the traditional Golden Gala meeting. World record holder Ryan Crouser will not be at the start in Florence, but the Czech thrower will still have strong opponents. All the medalists from last year’s world championship will start in the men’s 100, but Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs withdrew from it due to back problems, just like in Rabat.
Czech record holder Staněk entered the season in Turnov with a quality performance of 21.71 meters. The best European of the current season, however, is three centimeters better than Zane Weir, who will be the favorite of the home fans in Florence. The starting list includes two throwers who have already sent the ball over 22 meters this year – American Joe Kovacs (22.69) and New Zealander Tom Walsh (22.12).
The expected sprint duel between Jacobs and world champion Fred Kerley will not take place in Florence either. Jacobs had to postpone the start of the season again. The organizers got the vice-champion of the world Marvin Bracy instead, so in Florence will be all the Americans who have mastered the podium at the World Cup. Third to the party is bronze medalist Trayvon Bromell. The home star will be the discovery of the indoor season, Samuele Ceccarelli, who also beat Jacobs at HME and won the 60-meter race.
In the 400-meter steeplechase, the Dutchwoman Femke Bolová, who leads the world charts with a time of 53.12 from a smaller meeting in Belgium, will make her first appearance in this year’s Diamond League. In competition with Rabat winner Shamier Little and Jamaican Rushell Clayton, she could get under 53 seconds. The long hurdles will also be run by the American Anna Hallová, who won the heptathlon at the prestigious meeting in Götzis at the weekend.
The star-studded starting field of pole vaulters is led by the Americans Katie Moon and Sandi Morris, which is complemented by the bronze medalist from the World Cup Nina Kennedy from Australia.
The first outdoor race in her main discipline awaits the Olympic champion and two-time world champion in the distance Malaika Mihambová. Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers, who surprisingly dominated the March European Indoor Championships in Istanbul in a personal record of 700 centimeters, will try to follow up on her great performance from the hall in the long-distance sector.
The main program of the meeting in Florence will start at 20:04. Koulari will start the competition at 19:15. Discus and triple jumpers will also be presented in the preliminary program.
