The announcement of the development of the remake of the third part of the famous Metal Gear series with the new name Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was certainly among the most important news of the entire PlayStation Showcase, especially for fans of the saga. Game portal editors IGN then they had a chance to talk to Konami developers and we can learn some new information thanks to that.
The first question, to which we practically couldn’t wait for a positive answer, concerned whether Hideo Kojima, head of production of the original, or possibly Joji Shinkawa, the main art designer of the original game, who is currently working with Kojima in his studio Kojima Productions, is somehow involved in the development.
At Konami, as expected, they shook their heads. “Kojima and Shinkawa are not involved in the development of the remake,” they stated. “However, our development team will work diligently to create a remake and all ports (for the Master Collection) so that even more players around the world can enjoy them on multiple platforms.” The central roles will be taken by Konami developers who “have previously been involved to work on previous games in the Metal Gear series”. In doing so, they will be collaborating with the Virtuos studio, which “has also already participated in the production of previous Metal Gear installments.”
The choice of the third part for the development of the remake was also discussed. Konami has confirmed what many fans have already guessed correctly – it starts with a triple, because it is where the story of the series de facto starts. “We chose Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater because it depicts the birth of Big Boss, which is practically the beginning of the entire Metal Gear franchise,” a company spokesperson said. “The second reason is the fact that fans have been talking about a remake of this game for a long time.”
The developers also explained the name of the remake (often spelled directly with a Greek letter like Metal Gear Solid Δ). “We chose the letter delta because it fits conceptually with the remake. Delta is a letter of the Greek alphabet that represents a change, possibly a difference in mathematical notation, and also has the meaning of a change in quantity without a change in structure.” However, the creators also immediately confirmed that the suggested changes will not affect the story – it will remain completely the same.
And when asked if this is a single swallow or the beginning of some bigger plans, Konami answered quite clearly: “As for the remakes of other parts, we will monitor the reactions and demand of the players, and we will arrange accordingly.” In other words, if you want more Metal Gears, buy the old three. Simple as hell.
