The children of the elementary school of Kimolos acquired a new green botanical garden; in the garden were planted mainly local plants, which “tell” to the children of the island the history of their place. Thrumbi, carnations, skin, oregano, the herb of love are some of the natural jewels that will now take care of primary school children and will beautify the courtyard of their school.
The move was made in the context of actions of the organization “Barren Line Fertile”. After the lessons were over, teachers, members of the organization, an agronomist, a forester, and the deputy mayor, Takis Sardis, gathered at the school, with the aim of landscaping the garden.
Eugenia Eleftheriadou is in charge of the programs at the Barren Fertile Line, and speaking to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, she explained the purpose of this action: botanical garden in the elementary school of Kimolos so that the students can receive those stimuli that will inform them about the plants of their place “.
Kalliopi Grammatikopoulou, the agronomist who participated in the action, offered a large part of the species that were planted. She stated that the goal was to create a theme park in the primary school with local plants, some more aromatic and others more ornamental. Thus, according to her, the park has “groupings” through which children have the opportunity to recognize plants through their appearance and smells.
He adds: “The goal is for the children to come in contact with the soil but also to start” playing “and creating with the earth. Also, through the action, the children come in contact with a living organism, such as plants, and learn to take care of them, to observe them, cultivating a responsible attitude towards them. In general, I believe that through this activity many stimuli are given, many senses are cultivated and of course you learn and know your own place “.
This process introduces the children to the special flora of their place, which is best described by George Petrakis, agronomist-forester and head of the landscape restoration department of the company Imerys. “The logic was to create a garden that would not need any watering because the plants are local, have their own mechanisms and can overcome the hot dry summer and fall into lethargy. This is the mechanism, the plants are not dry, they just sleep for that and are called phrygana “.
Characteristic of the excitement with which the children accepted this change is the fact that although they had finished school that day, they wanted to stay out of school to watch the process by which they would get a separate courtyard-botanical garden. The children may not have been involved in its creation, but they are now responsible for watering and maintaining it.
The special education teacher and head of the school, Maria Petraki, told APE-MPE that the children were excited and want to take care of them in order to grow up. “In essence, they see that school is not just about learning letters but it is also about other things like learning to protect the environment, loving plants and animals,” he notes.
It is important to note that the action was supported by the Cyclades Preservation Fund and is part of both the Greening Schools program and the Barren Fertile Line program “Culture Closer to All”.
