Killing flocks of guest birds by trapping them in technology

Mahananda Adhikari Mintu, Paikgacha (Khulna) Representative ::

Trapped by technology, guest birds are being killed in flocks in the pike grove of Khulna. Organized hunting gangs from different reservoirs and shrimp ponds of the upazila are hunting the guest birds every night by listening to the audio of the call of foreign guest birds on their mobile phones, luring them down and trapping them. Many complain of the police administration’s collusion in stopping the killing of birds.

A person who did not want to be named said that the police recovered bird killing trap amplifiers and batteries from Lata Union of the upazila on Wednesday but the hunters were not arrested. Later that day, the bird was taken away from the police station in the evening. At the beginning of winter, different species of guest birds come to Bangladesh’s valleys in groups after traveling thousands of miles in the hope of some warmth from different winter countries of the world. However, due to the regular persecution of hunters and the lack of shelter, guest birds are being killed indiscriminately. Then there is the supply of Rasna Bilasar. Although the government has enacted strict laws to stop bird hunting, bird hunting is not stopped even for one day due to various crises.

The forestry project named ‘Shamim Hossain’s Ibrahim Garden’ is located not far from the upazila’s town center towards Koira, across the Shivbati Bridge, opposite the under-construction Agricultural College. At the end of the day, from evening onwards, thousands of guest birds of different species gather in groups including Baldhens, Dalakchus, Khaeri and native bucks and native birds take refuge in Ibrahim Garden. Soladana, Garukhali, Chandkhali Boyra, Kachubunia, Basakhali, Baisarabad, Tentultala, Lata, Ulubunia, Putimari, Shankardana, Hanimunkia, Bahirbunia, Deluti, Soladana, Kapilmuni, Taltala, Goalbathan, Srifaltala, Pratapkati, Shamukpota, Chakabgura, Kharia, Vasi, Akai in the upazila. Thakunbari, Amirpur, Bainbaria, Kumkhali and various areas across the wide area of the municipality have large canals, reservoirs and shrimp enclosures. Depending on the species, these guest birds of different species gather in groups to collect food in the morning or evening.

At this time, with the connivance of the employees of the concerned enclosure or reservoir, or the hunting gangs start hunting birds in advance. Locals said that earlier they used to mix poison and sleeping pills in various fish and insects like grasshoppers. Traps are kept somewhere. In this way the Shikhari Chakra used to hunt different species of birds with traps and poison baits every day. But now the hunters are easily fooling these birds with the help of technology. By searching from Google, the calls of different species of birds are being downloaded to their mobiles. After seeing the movement of birds in the night sky, the amplifier and mobile phones are starting to play the calls of those birds. Then the bird hears that tone and thinks its other mates are safely there.

And the hunters are lured by these daily new deceptions and get caught up in the traps. In this way, many guest birds are being hunted every day. Robin Mandal of Soladana Union said that only Lata Union is killing guest birds in all Paikgacha police stations. When the guests play music like a bird’s dock, they fall down thinking that their mates are there, and there is a net trap like this, brutal bird massacre, the sound of this music is heard at night. During the day there are frequent sightings of Bash Pute trap leaves. He thinks the referee of the bird killing is the police, otherwise the police come but the music stops for a few hours. Then as before, the police probably come to collect the birds. Birds eat other pests, including current insects, and protect the balance of the environment, so it is our moral responsibility to save them.

Barun Pad Mandal said, not only Lata, this work is happening in many places. There are reports that many senior police officers are also involved here. Paikgacha Civil Rights Implementation Committee founder president Prashant Kumar Mondal said that every year at the beginning of winter, different species of guest birds come to our country from the main winter countries. They mainly stay in the area from November-December to March-April. After that, the survivors of the arrivals flew to their home countries. However, as there is no safe haven or sanctuary for them to stay, most of the guest birds who come from thousands of miles away just to survive are killed in migration.

He also said that he demanded to strengthen the administrative system along with monitoring to stop bird hunting and increase public awareness.

Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ziaur Rahman Zia said that if he gets information about bird poaching, he will take strict action against those concerned and will launch an operation today.
