Killed by putting a pistol in the mouth

The court sentenced three defendants to life imprisonment in the open shooting of a businessman named Mohammad Hossain 23 years ago in Kurbaniganj, Chittagong.

The three convicted are Khorshed Alam, Md. Hasan and Jasim Uddin. Among them Khorshed Alam is absconding. The remaining two were sent to prison after the verdict.

The lawyer of the state in the tribunal. Jahangir Alam said, “This is a highly discussed event of that time. A businessman, Mohammad Hossain alias Ledu Saudagar, was shot dead by putting a pistol in his mouth for protesting the robbery.”

He said, “As the murder charges were proved, the court sentenced each of the three accused to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10,000, in default of six months imprisonment. In another section, the three defendants were sentenced to five years in prison, fined five thousand taka, and in default of payment, sentenced to another three months in prison.

According to the documents of the case, on January 6, 2000, businessman Mohammad Hossain alias Ledu Saudagar saw robbers snatching Tk 10,000 from an acquaintance while passing through Qorbaniganj road of Chittagong Kotwali police station.

When he tried to resist, the robbers shot him. He later died in hospital. In this incident, his son Anwar Hossain filed a case as a plaintiff.

In this case, the police issued a charge sheet on July 4, 2002. After hearing the testimony of seven witnesses, the court on Monday found the three defendants guilty.
