Somehow imperceptibly, almost all compact city cars left Russia, which replaced compact class sedans and liftbacks like Hyundai Solaris and Skoda Rapid. There are always two real city cars left in our market, this is the hero of our material Kia Picanto and Chevrolet Spark, together with its analogue under the Ravon brand. Yes, there is also MINI, but it is still a little different in format, and it is already playing in the premium segment. The rest of the well-known models such as Toyota Yaris and Nissan Micra, although presented in the European market, are no longer officially supplied to us.
The third generation of the compact Korean hatchback Kia Picanto was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and a restyled version of the model was released in 2020. Then, in March 2020, the novelty reached the Russian market. Despite the fact that the demand for city cars was small, the brand’s representative office still decided to leave the Picanto, apparently to expand the model range and as a competitive advantage in the completely deserted market for compact city cars.
Externally, the Kia Picanto can be described as a cute little car. The car is not taken seriously, especially in such a bright yellow color, as we have on the test. But such cars have always been distinguished by such a pleasant appearance, since in most cases they are chosen emotionally, even without paying special attention to the technical characteristics. The goal of a city car is to take the owner from point A to point B in a large metropolis in relative comfort and allow him to park without problems even in a busy parking lot. Since most of the players in this segment have left us, Picanto cannot even be compared with anything, only with Spark, in which the Korean, in my opinion, wins in everything. In general, the Kia looks modern, and the front end is even serious, regardless of the size of the car. The headlights are not bad here, but the usual halogen projection type with their own pattern of LED running lights and also with LED taillights.
The interior design I would characterize as typical for inexpensive models from Kia. With a straight front panel that visually allows you to increase the interior space, with a color display of the media system towering above it and a low center tunnel. Stylish, neat, but without frills. There are small touches designed to give a certain charm to the interior, such as contrasting inserts on the chairs and small decorative linings on the doors, but, really, this is the prerogative of the expensive versions. As, however, and metal pedal pads and a beveled bottom steering wheel, which are only in the GT Line. According to the materials, there are also no revelations, mostly visually pleasant, but hard plastic, small faux leather overlays on the armrests and seat upholstery also made of eco-leather with perforation (in the maximum configuration), however, the latter does not save in the heat, and you have your back after the trip it will still be wet.
Despite the fact that the Picanto is small, even a tall driver can easily fit in it, however, the seat will have to be moved as far back and down as possible. The only pity is that the steering wheel is only vertically adjustable, so you have to reach for it or move closer. The seats are wide, as far as the dimensions allow, with poorly developed lateral support and not the best profile, so after a couple of hours spent driving, you start to get tired in them. The car does not press in the shoulders, but the narrow central armrest is enough for only one person, so the driver will have to fight for him with a particularly impudent front passenger. In terms of visibility, there are no special questions for the city car, medium-sized side mirrors, in the maximum configuration, they are also complemented by a blind spot monitoring system.
By myself, with a height of 187 cm, I cannot sit down, but, however, even a child cannot sit behind me. So if the driver is tall, then there is only one option to put one passenger or a child in the seat behind – this is to press the front passenger by moving his seat. By the way, there is no need to infringe on the passenger in the space. Yes, he will no longer be able to lean back imposingly on the back of his chair, but he will not sit completely squeezed and uncomfortable either. You will have to tinker with the installation of the child seat back, although the Isofix fasteners are along the edges of the sofa, they are located under the slots of the upholstery, so this task will not work quickly.
The trunk in the Kia Picanto, as befits a real city hatchback, is small, with a volume of only 255 liters. You can easily put shopping bags or one small suitcase in it. You can increase the usable space by folding the backrests of the rear sofa from the passenger compartment, which when folded form a flat surface, but are much higher than the level of the bottom of the luggage compartment. The trunk door can only be opened and closed manually, and for the latter you will have to apply a little more effort than you would like, or already slam it by pressing from the outside, which is not very convenient in bad weather.
Media system in Picanto with 8-inch low-resolution IPS touchscreen. The picture on the display is a little faded, but the image remains readable in the sun, the viewing angles are large, and its sensitivity is at a good level. The design of the menu is simple in style, and on the main screen you can mix information at your discretion. Native navigation in the car is not provided even in the highest trim levels, but the situation is saved by the support of the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay platforms, and the latter can also work in wireless mode.
Only one phone can be connected to the system at a time, and if you need to change it to another, you can do this from the settings. Despite the presence of a 4.2-inch Supervision color screen on the dashboard, information from the media system is not transmitted to it, so you can only work with playlists or call lists from the central display. Connecting devices via Bluetooth occurs without problems, but the speakerphone works averagely, at speed, when it gets noisy in the cabin, you have to speak louder so that the interlocutor can hear you. To connect devices in Kia, only one USB-A connector is available, and in order to recharge additional devices, you will have to use an adapter to the car socket, which is located nearby. There is a niche for a medium-sized smartphone under the center console, the only thing is that it is deep enough and far away, so it is not very convenient to remove the device from it. Modern gadgets are recharged slowly from the on-board network, so you will have to use adapters for fast charging.
The dashboard in the car is classic, with large symbols and white backlighting, information from it is easily readable in any conditions. A digital speedometer can be displayed on the central display. On the same screen, the data of the on-board computer is displayed, as well as some car settings are made, including changing the color scheme.
According to the driver assistants, the Kia Picanto in the GT Line configuration was not entirely empty. So, the car has the usual cruise control, the control of which falls on the keys and rockers on the steering wheel, which are usual for the brand. There is a blind spot monitoring system with visual and audio information. In addition, the car has an average quality rear-view camera with dynamic markings, which, despite not the best picture, still helps out. It is complemented by a side collision warning system when leaving the parking lot in reverse, as well as rear parking sensors.
As for the comfortable options, everything is quite simple here, there is a two-level heating of the front seats and a heating of the steering wheel with buttons located in front of the automatic transmission lever. Single-zone climate control, with convenient control knobs and its own display. The climate system does not work very well in automatic mode and often requires manual adjustment of the blowing speed.
For the Picanto’s comfort, there are not enough stars from the sky, at city speeds it is quiet, but once you accelerate a little, and the noise from the road and aerodynamic noise appear in the cabin. The suspension copes well with small irregularities, it is already more difficult for it to have medium potholes, but on large ledges or pits, and even at the joints of bridges, it throws up so that, not even an hour, you hit your head on the ceiling. So if you see a joint or a large pothole, you should slow down thoroughly so as not to shake.
Unfortunately, a new 100-horsepower turbocharged engine with a five-speed robot did not reach Russia. We have a choice of only two naturally aspirated engines 1.0 and 1.2 liters with a capacity of 67 and 84 hp. respectively. The first comes only in conjunction with a five-speed manual, and the second – only with a four-speed automatic. The drive in all variants is front-wheel drive only. We had a car with an older engine and automatic transmission. Such a bundle allows you to comfortably keep in the stream at city speeds, but when you leave the same Moscow Ring Road, you already feel a lack of power. Plus, when accelerating, the box does not react too quickly to pushing the accelerator, and when it nevertheless thinks and turns on a lower gear, the “squeal” of the engine bursts into the cabin. But, in general, if you do not give too much gas, but move evenly, the car will be quite obedient and responsive. The control of the car is a little lacking in accuracy, the steering wheel is slightly wadded, and constant adjustments are required on the arc.
I was unpleasantly surprised by the fuel consumption of the updated Picanto, in mixed mode it took about 7.5-8 liters per 100 km, and in the city the consumption exceeded 9 liters. Moreover, it should be noted that the city car has a rather small tank, only 35 liters. But on the other hand, aspirated engines allow you to fill in 92nd gasoline, which is already good.
Prices for the restyled Kia Picanto in our market start at 849,900 rubles for the younger version with mechanics, the older one with a gun will cost at least 979,900 rubles. For the metallic will have to add another 6,000 rubles. The test car in the maximum configuration GT-Line already cost 1,180,900 rubles.
