Khamenei blames US and Israel, Biden promises new sanctions
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Monday accused the United States, Israel and their “agents” of fomenting the anti-government protest movement sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini in Tehran.
“I say clearly that these riots and the insecurity are the work of America, of the usurping Zionist regime (Israel, editor’s note) and their salaried agents, with the help of certain traitor Iranians abroad”, a- he said in his first reaction to the death of the young woman. “Police are obliged to stand up to criminals and keep society safe,” he continued. “So weakening the police means strengthening the criminals, whoever attacks the police leaves the people defenseless against criminals, thugs, thieves.”
In the evening, Joe Biden said that “this week, the United States will impose new sanctions on the perpetrators of violence against peaceful demonstrators” in Iran.
The US president said he was “seriously concerned about reports of an increasingly violent crackdown on protesters in Iran, including students and women”.
