Olomouc – Bats in the bat pavilion of the zoological garden on Svaté Kopeček near Olomouc gave birth to 16 young this year, which is the highest number during the entire existence of this pavilion. Zoo spokeswoman Iveta Gronská told ČTK about this today. The kaloň is listed on the list of endangered endemic species and included in several international conservation programs.
“The baby bats are already flying freely. Some with such enthusiasm for life that many times it seems that they will not take a turn and have a closer encounter with the visitors. The smaller babies stick to their mothers for the time being, who take care of them until they are two to three months old. And kangaroos run into it, with whom they share a peaceful coexistence,” said zoologist Jitka Vokurková.
The Olomouc Zoo has been breeding Rodriguez bats since 1999. So far, 205 individuals have been born there. In the pavilion, in which visitors walk among flying bats, there is an inverted lighting regime. It is dark during the day. “It is for the reason that visitors have the opportunity to see bats active. In the evening, the pavilion is lit up and the bats retreat to rest,” said Gronská.
The baton’s original homeland is Rodriguez Island in the Indian Ocean, where it lives in tropical forests. In the 1970s, as a result of a typhoon, the numbers of Rodriguez bats fell to only 70 individuals and their population was almost exterminated. “Thanks to intensive protection, bats have succeeded in multiplying and today their population numbers up to 20,000 individuals. The Jersey Zoo, founded by the well-known zoologist and writer Gerald Durrell, who captured the last few wild bats at the time and established a successful breeding facility, has a significant share in this,” said Gronská . All cockatoos in zoos are the property of the island of Mauritius and are only loaned to breeders.
