Kakao announced on the 20th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding to create an eco-friendly data center at the Siheung campus of Seoul National University.

The Kakao Eco-friendly Data Center is scheduled to be established on the M1 site of the Siheung Campus of Seoul National University with a total floor area of more than 40,000 pyeong and an electric power of 100 MW.

This is the largest data center that Kakao plans to establish, and both sides plan to start construction in 2024 and complete the construction in 2026 after going through administrative procedures such as city planning approvals and permits.

As part of Kakao’s ongoing ESG management, it is designed and operated in consideration of environmental issues such as the use of eco-friendly energy.

Kakao and Seoul National University will continue to actively cooperate and support each other for the successful creation of Kakao’s eco-friendly data center by signing a memorandum of understanding on this day.

Through this data center establishment, Kakao plans to build infrastructure for new businesses such as metaverse, artificial intelligence, and cloud, and conduct industry-university cooperation and joint research with Seoul National University in future industries. In addition, the two sides plan to jointly promote ESG-level efforts such as developing specialized projects to meet local community needs, establishing an eco-friendly energy use plan, and exchanging excellent human resources.

Seongsu Kim, Chairman of the Kakao Board of Directors, said, “Through this cooperation with Seoul National University to establish an eco-friendly data center, we will secure various future businesses of Kakao and infrastructure for the convenience of users. We plan to actively review and implement it together with the company,” he said.

Sejeong Oh, President of Seoul National University, said, “The construction of an eco-friendly data center will carry out joint research with various academic fields and lead the development of the information and communication and software industries, as well as contribute to revitalizing the local economy. I am looking forward to what kind of synergy it will create with Kakao’s innovative platform.”
