Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL) does not see rational reasons for a general strike. He is ready to discuss with trade unionists during the holidays about possible minor changes for the second reading of the consolidation package in the Chamber of Deputies. He told journalists this in response to the words of representatives of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions (ČMKOS) about the fact that the unions are ready for a nationwide protest. From June 26 to 30, when the debate on the package is expected to open in the House of Representatives, then individual unions and organizations can organize their protest actions.
“It is true that if they want to negotiate, I am ready to sit down with them,” Jurečka said to the trade unions. However, the convening of the entire tripartite, i.e. the meeting of employers, trade unions and government representatives at the Straka Academy, is up to the Prime Minister, he added. The deputy prime minister does not see reasons for a general strike due to low unemployment and wage growth.
Trade unionists from the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions established a national strike committee today. The confederation will also request the convening of an extraordinary tripartite meeting due to the government’s proposals. According to the chairman of ČMKOS Josef Středula, the meeting of government members, trade unionists and employers should take place before the end of June. The leaders invited the cabinet to negotiate again. “It is not satisfactory to sit in one room, it will not bring any quality. Quality is the direction of action. That they will look for common, perhaps other solutions that would help, calm the situation,” said Středula.
ČMKOS is the largest trade union headquarters in the country. It covers 31 unions with about 270,000 members. The trade unionists called on the cabinet to negotiate. They criticized him for not debating his intentions with them in advance and for giving only five working days to send comments on amendments to almost six dozen laws. Leaders do not agree with VAT changes, reducing the amount for salaries or renewing health insurance for employees. They propose their 12 steps to budget recovery. Among them is the cancellation of tax changes from recent years or the restoration of EET.
The strike committee consists of leaders of 12 unions, head office management and technical support staff. Unions are also preparing their events for the last week of June.
