Judges are preparing to consider the dismissal of A. Markevičius, promising an investigation in welfare courts

Sigita Rudėnaitė, chairwoman of the Council of Judges and interim head of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, told BNS that driving under the influence of alcohol should probably be considered a single offense, but, on the other hand, stress and stress at work cannot be ignored.

“It can’t be overlooked that there is tension at work, that it’s a job that puts a lot of stress on it. On the other hand, we expect the judge that the judge is the person who has to evaluate the consequences of his actions. Those consequences are almost guaranteed dismissal and no benefits, but at the same time it is necessary to assess how the act will affect the entire judicial system, ”said S. Rudėnaitė.

According to her, deeper reasons should be sought for why judges drive intoxicated, knowing full well that this is not possible and what threatens it.

Last year, the Council of Judges initiated an investigation into psychological well-being in the courts. It is scheduled to be done this year.

It is intended to interview not only judges anonymously, but also other court employees regarding the microclimate at work, interpersonal relationships, and workload.

“We want to see the reasons for people’s psychological discomfort and insecurity at work. (…) We will try to find the weakest points, ”said the Chairperson of the Judicial Council.

She noted that judges with work or personal problems may avoid seeking professional psychological help.

“It is natural that people, including judges, in professions that have to undergo health checks are afraid to reveal their problems. Going to a psychologist, and yet not to a psychiatrist, carries a very high risk that this may be exacerbated afterwards. As a result, people avoid such things because it is not accepted normally, ”said S. Rudėnaitė.

She also hinted that talks would be held with members of the judiciary to pay more attention to the well-being of colleagues.

“It simply came to our notice then. Judges do not live in a vacuum, they communicate with colleagues. I think the first thing we will try is to get back to talking to the community, that you need to feel responsible for someone around you if you see a colleague having a problem. It may not be alcoholism. It is necessary to participate in some way, to try to help, not to let it go, because not only a specific person suffers from it, but also all of us, ”S. Rudėnaitė stated.

She also hoped that the situation would be improved by the requirement that this year came into force that during the selection of judges for various positions, the personal and business qualities of the candidate, resilience to stress, adaptation to situations, resilience to corruption must be assessed.

“It simply came to our notice then. Of course, you will not do anything with one bridge, “the head of the Council of Judges considered.

According to her, the President and the Seimas should also be concerned about what is happening in the courts.

According to S. Rudėnaitė, the courts themselves can initiate only small changes, and only the Seimas can adopt essential changes that would improve the working conditions of judges. She recalled that for several years now, corrections that would remove uncharacteristic functions of the courts have been wandering in the corridors of government.

“But again, this initiative has stalled somewhere,” said the chairwoman of the Council of Judges.

A.Markevičius got stuck driving while intoxicated after the car he was driving in Alytus obstructed another car parked in the yard.

People did not suffer during the incident. The judge recorded a drunkenness of 1.78 per mille.

President Gitanas Nausėda applied to the Judicial Council for advice on the dismissal of this judge for his actions in demeaning the judge.

According to the presidency, this is the fourth time in the last two years that a judge has been questioned about liability for drunk driving.

Last year, Judge of the Supreme Court Arvydas Daugėla was dismissed for the same reason, and last year, Judge of Alytus District Court Vaidutė Stangvilienė.

In May 2020, Mindaugas Striaukas, a judge of the Vilnius City District Court, got drunk behind the wheel, but he kept his job.
